I do not know exactly what happened in the Crescent, but I know enough about the British sailors later employed by the state.
Scurvy, dizziness, severe punishment and measely payments were part of the game. Although the food was garbage (never tried cakes? Brick mainly on pulp) and the conditions and wages, which is worse, actually treated much better than their parents at home.
I'm in the Navy, so we should have became aware of it. Sailors such expeditions are normally closed, and could find a place to prey, to their destination or traveling. Or maybe just for the adventure that was. The difficulty could be storms, disease, management of supply, Cabin Fever, Mutiny potential, and I think suck TRIPS.
